Introducing the Iman Skirt + launch discount šŸŽ‰

Delphine (Sewing Tidbits)

Dear readers,

Iā€™m so happy to bring you a new addition to the Just Patterns family and my first pattern of 2023. I took my time with this one because I wanted to polish the instructions. My obsession with this classic 90s design started with a wool lined version for winter, but as the testing (and the year šŸ˜…) went on, I realized that it needed the addition of an unlined variant and a denim one. However, that proved a bit of a headache when I tried to do one set of instructions for all the variations. I eventually bit the bullet, and I wrote and illustrated 3 sets of detailed instructions. The goal is to help you achieve perfect finishings regardless of the version you are sewing. Itā€™s almost 3 patterns in one šŸ˜Š.

Let me introduce you to the Iman Skirt:

Iman is a versatile maxi skirt featuring four back darts and a curved waistband resting slightly below the natural waist, for a tailored and sleek silhouette. The classic lined and unlined versions showcase Italian pockets, a front fly, belt loops, and front and back vents that enhance mobility and add a touch of fun by revealing a flash of leg. On the denim version, the details are highlighted by topstitching, and the side of the front fly is inverted. The back vent is replaced by a flat-felled seam, and the front one by a slit.

You all know that I love good fit and beautiful insides so the pattern has 4 back darts, a wide waistband that extends into ties, and clean finishings with french seams and baby hems.

Samples are sewn denim, ramie, linen and wool suitings (super 110s).

For this pattern, I recommend medium-weight woven fabrics with some drape, such as wool or cotton suiting, wool crepe, lightweight wool tweed, cotton twill, tencel, linen, linen-cotton blends or denim. If you want more body and to minimize wrinkling, you could consider fully fusing interfacing to the all the skirt pieces of a lined version. Thatā€™s what I did for the navy skirt you see here.

The pattern is drafted for a height of 5'5" (1m65) and is available in the size range: 34-60. All pattern pieces are have lengthen/shorten lines to ease the adjustments. This pattern is an intermediate sew, and has some interesting techniques like lining a front fly zipper by machine. In case you need help, I curate a list of helpful tutorials on the resource page!

The pattern includes:

  • Layered PDF pattern in 3 options (print at home for letter or A4, A0 and projector);

  • a Cutterā€™s must (a summary table of the pattern pieces and cutting information);

  • PDF layout;

  • order of operations ;

  • and step-by-step illustrated instructions.

As usual, the pattern features Just Patternsā€™ signature ā€œorder of operationsā€ as it comes in handy for experienced sewists who like to refer quickly to steps without scrolling through pages of instructions.

Iman is perfect when paired with any of the Just Patterns tops, but it looks especially good with the Veronica Vest and the Tyra Tee (the tops you can see in the pictures above) so both patterns are also 20% off to celebrate the release!

I hope you will enjoy sewing Iman. Donā€™t forget to tag #ImanSkirt if you post on social media!

Happy sewing!
